![]() ![]() I have to say, folks, this game is awesome and exactly what I and many were hoping it would be. Luckily for me I still had nearly all of my health potions and managed to bring him down to complete the demo. This one was significantly hard as he became far more aggressive with his blade attacks and would conjure blue fire around the arena to limit your movement options. Once the life bar was empty, it stood up on two legs and took a new form. He also hit pretty hard! It became quickly apparent that once you get over the intimidation factor it was just a matter of figuring out when to dodge and when combos begin/end so you can move it for heavy damage. It was a hulking blue creature that moved on all four legs and would charge at you with twin blades that it conjured on its arms. This reminded me very much of a Souls boss. Here the player was given numerous health potions but imagine in the main game we'll usually have fewer and will have to play smart and often defensively to win.įinally, the boss. And I'll have you know that enemies hit pretty hard, especially the larger fire-armor-like enemies in the demo. It's obvious that properly managing this dodge meter is going to be as important as managing stamina in a game like Souls.Įnemies were pretty aggressive and never seemed to attack just once everything that I encountered was at least a 2-3 hit combo. Every time you dodge a notch on your energy meter goes down which will need a few seconds to return. The dodges themselves move you a good distance in what I would describe as kind of like a shadow form and can be executed at any time, even mid combo. While pushing two buttons for a dodge is unusual, I'm happy to report that it feels just fine in practice. I stuck with the default sword because I liked its speed.ĭodging is a huge component in this game and was mapped somewhat oddly to x and circle at the same time. Your default was kind of like a longsword while the other two options were a much larger two-handed sword and a double-bladed pole arm weapon sort of like Darth Maul's lightsaber. ![]() You also had the option of switching weapons. Much like in other character action games, you can use X to jump and perform attacks in the air as well as hold triangle to launch an opponent and continue your combo while airborne. I toyed around a bit to get the hang of the controls and found that stringing together satisfying combos using only square and triangle was easy and felt good. It gave a quick rundown of the basic controls and dropped you in initially with a single enemy. This particular demo was set in a cave that served as a combat arena. Animations and particle effects were also impressive. Character models and textures look very nice given the small team (now up to 8 people according to a rep there) and the framerate was silky smooth. To start, I have to say that game is very pretty. It's a pure character action game with fast, ferocious combat and smooth and responsive controls. I'm happy to report that this 100% scratches the DMC itch that so many of us have. Figured I would get this one out of the way as it's easily the most well-known game in the line-up. ![]()
